Keeping busy in Montreal

Gestern war ich hier so eingespannt, dass ich nicht dazu gekommen bin an dieser Stelle einen Eintrag zu verfassen. Zunaechst stand ein Vortrag meiner Professorin und von Professor Pierre Borne vor dem oertlichen Chapter des IEEE statt. Der Vortrag von Professor Borne drehte sich groesstenteils um Optimierung mit Methoden des SoftComputings, des Feldes, das mich waehrend meines Studiums schon immer sehr interessiert hat.

Danach gab es die Moeglichkeit bei einem leichten Mittagessen ein wenig sozialen Kontakt zu pflegen, allerdings waren die Vortraege nicht so sehr gut besucht. Es fanden sich vor allem Ingenieure unter den Zuhoerern, die eher an Anwendungsmoeglichlkeiten, als an der Theorie interessiert waren.

Den Nachmittag und Abend verbrachte ich damit ein Paper meiner Professorin fuer die International Conference on Complex Systems (ICCS) zu formatieren. Dabei ist mir wieder bewusst geworden, wie sehr ich doch Word nicht mag. Nach einingen Stunden, die ich damit verbracht hatte ein Word Dokument umzuformatieren, habe ich es dann doch in LaTeX gemacht. Und das wird auch in Zukunft immer sofort gemacht!

In zwei Stunden beginnt nun hier der Workshop, der der Grund fuer meinen Aufenthalt hier in Montreal ist. Ich bin daher schon sehr gespannt, was die Redner dort vortragen werden und einige interessante Leute zu treffen.

I was so busy yesterday, that I did not get a round tuit to post on this blog. the day started with a talk by my supervisor and Professor Pierre Borne for the local chapter of the IEEE. The presentation of Prof. Borne dealt with the application of SoftComputing methods to optimization problems, a field I have been very interesting while I was still studying in Germany.

Following the talks, there was the chance to socialize a little bit over a light lunch, although the talk was not attended by too many listeners. Most of the attendees were engineers that were more interested in applicability than in research.

The afternoon and evening was spent formating a paper of my Prof. for the International Conference on Complex Systems (ICCS), a procedure during which I noticed, once again, how little love I have for Word. After several hours trying to get Word to do what I want, I did it in LaTeX, and that's the way it will be done in the future, to begin with!

In about two hours, the workshop I have come to Montreal for will begin. I am very excited to hear the talks there and hopefully meet scores of interesting people.
