Keeping busier: IEEE SMC 2007

Nach dem Workshop gestern, war heute der erste offizielle Tag der IEEE Konferenz Systems, Man and Cybernetics. Da gestern Hilfswillige gefehlt haben, habe ich mich freiwillig gemeldet, um bei den anfallenden Aufgaben zu helfen. Heute war der Tag also groesstenteils mit Verwaltungsarbeiten gefuellt, etwa damit bei der Registrierung der Konferenzteilnehmer behilflich zu sein. Trotzdem habe ich heute einige interessante Personen kennengelernt und ein paar Vortraege gehoert, die sich mit Themen des angewandten SoftComputings und, was fuer meine anstehende Doktorarbeit wichtiger ist, mit komplexen Systemen beschaefftigt haben.

Zu meinem Forschungsschwerpunkt werde ich spaeter mehr schreiben, wenn ich ihn etwas mehr eingegrenzt habe. Allgemein hat mir die Konferenz bisher einen Einblick in das Feld gegeben und, da groesstenteils Ingenieure anwesend waren, mir etwas Verstaendnis zu deren Vorgehensweise gegeben.

Morgen frueh geht es um 7h30 weiter, und ich fuehle mich im Augenblick schon ein bisschen geschafft. Es hat schon sehr viel Spass gemacht auch mal einen Einblick in die Arbeiten zu bekommen, die fuer waehrend einer Konferenz so hinter den Kulissen anfallen. Leider ist der ganze Spass morgen fuer mich auch schon wieder vorbei, da ich am Mittwoch wieder nach Fredericton fliege. Aber zuerst steht morgen abend ein Bankett an, von dem ich dann Mittwoch mehr berichten werde.

Following yesterday's workshop, today marked the first regular day of the IEEE conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics. Because there was a lack of students helping the organizers, I volunteered to help out with the tasks at hand today. Thus, the day was mainly filled with doing administrative work, such as helping with registering the conference's participants. Is still managed to meet some interesting people and listen to a couple of talks that dealt with applied SoftComputing and---which is more important in regards to the research I am supposed to do for my phd---complex systems.

I will go into the details of my area of research at a later time, once I have narrowed it down a bit more. So far, the conference has helped me understanding the field a bit better and, because most of the participants were engineers, to learn how they approached problems.

The show will go on tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM, and I am done for the day. It was fun getting an insight into the things that go on in the background during such a conference. Unfortunately, tomorrow will be my last day at the conference, as I will head back to Fredericton on Wednesday morning. But before that, there will be a banquet tomorrow evening. More on that once I am back from it.
