Cobalt blues

Ich war überrascht. Nachdem es nicht der Yaris geworden ist, hatte ich Sorgen, daß ich ein amerikanisches Auto mieten würde, das sich eher wie ein Boot verhält, als ein Straßenfahrzeug. Mit dieser Erwartungshaltung war es vielleicht nicht schwer positiv überrascht zu sein. Der Cobalt war bei weitem nicht so schlimm wie gedacht. Und jetzt, nachdem ich ihn abgegeben habe, vermisse ich ihn schon. Oder zumindest vermisse ich Autofahren.

Positiv waren natürlich die gut 150 PS. Außerdem war die Straßenlage für ein amerikanisches Auto gar nicht schlecht. Wo wir natürlich schon bei den nicht ganz so tollen Sachen sind. Die Straßenlage war auch nicht so hervorragend, nach europäischen Standards. Es untersteuert leicht, und die 4-Gang Automatik war auch nicht unbedingt dazu gemacht die Leistung schnell auf die Straße zu bringen. Andererseits liegt der Preis für einen neuen Cobalt bei rund $15.000.

Alles in allem, ein Auto, daß ich wieder mieten würde. Aber nicht in Deutschland. Hier in Kanada würde ich ihn schon durch die Gegend fahren.


I was surprised. After I did not take the Yaris, I was worried that I would rent an American car that behaved more like a boat than a road-going vehicle. Given these expectations, it probably wasn't too hard to be pleasantly surprised. The Cobalt was, by far, not as bad as I had thought. And now that I have returned it, I have the blues and miss it. Or, at least, I miss driving a car.

Very positiv, of course, were the Cobalt's 150 hp. Additionally, the suspension wasn't all bad for an American car. Which brings us to the things that are not necessarily A+. The suspension wasn't all that great, given European standards. There is some understeer, and the 4 speed automatic was not necessarily made to transfer the engines power to the road, either. But then, the price for a new Cobalt is about $15,000.

All things considered, the Cobalt is a car that I would rent again. Just not in Germany. Here in Canada, I don't have any reservations driving it around.
