I just needed a week

This past week, following the conference, I took some time off from posting to concentrate in the things I had to do for my phd studies. At the moment that means read, read, read. After finishing a book on networks (The Structure and Dynamics of Networks), I am currently getting up to speed on complex adaptive systems, mainly by reading various papers.

In the next couple of days, I will try to write a bit more about Montreal, because the city definitely needs more mention.

Keeping busier: IEEE SMC 2007

Following yesterday's workshop, today marked the first regular day of the IEEE conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics. Because there was a lack of students helping the organizers, I volunteered to help out with the tasks at hand today. Thus, the day was mainly filled with doing administrative work, such as helping with registering the conference's participants. Is still managed to meet some interesting people and listen to a couple of talks that dealt with applied SoftComputing and---which is more important in regards to the research I am supposed to do for my phd---complex systems.

I will go into the details of my area of research at a later time, once I have narrowed it down a bit more. So far, the conference has helped me understanding the field a bit better and, because most of the participants were engineers, to learn how they approached problems.

The show will go on tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM, and I am done for the day. It was fun getting an insight into the things that go on in the background during such a conference. Unfortunately, tomorrow will be my last day at the conference, as I will head back to Fredericton on Wednesday morning. But before that, there will be a banquet tomorrow evening. More on that once I am back from it.

Keeping busy in Montreal

I was so busy yesterday, that I did not get a round tuit to post on this blog. the day started with a talk by my supervisor and Professor Pierre Borne for the local chapter of the IEEE. The presentation of Prof. Borne dealt with the application of SoftComputing methods to optimization problems, a field I have been very interesting while I was still studying in Germany.

Following the talks, there was the chance to socialize a little bit over a light lunch, although the talk was not attended by too many listeners. Most of the attendees were engineers that were more interested in applicability than in research.

The afternoon and evening was spent formating a paper of my Prof. for the International Conference on Complex Systems (ICCS), a procedure during which I noticed, once again, how little love I have for Word. After several hours trying to get Word to do what I want, I did it in LaTeX, and that's the way it will be done in the future, to begin with!

In about two hours, the workshop I have come to Montreal for will begin. I am very excited to hear the talks there and hopefully meet scores of interesting people.

Montreal from Mont-Royal

After I attended a presentation at McGill University, given by my supervising professor, it was all up-hill for me---up Mont-Royal, to be exact. From here, one has a magnificent view of Montreal. Given that it is the beginning of October, the weather is great, and spending the rest of the evening in one of the street-side cafes, almost lets me forget that I am in North America and not in France.

Montreal is very different form the anglophone part of Canada that I have discovered so far. There is signifcant importance attached to their French heritage by the locals, something that is mirrored in all parts of the local culture. Even though I said before, quite jokingly, that Canada is just like southern France, this statement is almost true for Montreal.

The view down from Mont-Royal shows a different picture, at first sight. It reveals Montreal to be a modern metropolis, following the general example of other cities in the US or Canada. But that is only true to a limited extent, as there is a different, well, joie de vivre, with life pulsating at night in the old part of the city. Maybe Montreal is a little hint how things would've gone, had France kept the upper hand in the 18th century in this part of the Americas.

The scare of living under a red moon

Click for: German or English

Oktober 1957 passiert?

With all the travelling and the associated stress, I had not really noticed that it is October 4 today. Yet, when I surfed to the blog of the magnificent Phil Plait, alias The Bad Astronomer, I finally noticed. Fifty years ago to the day, we stood on the threshold of a new era that, unfortunatelz, did not develop the way I'd have preferred. But then, nobody asked me, anyway.

Alright, so what exactly happened on October 4, 1957? On of my great passions, ever since I have been a little kid, was the space program. And today, a mere 5 decades ago, the first artificial satellite was launched on top of a modified R-7 ICBM from the kazakh steppe. The small beeping ball with its four antennas, one of Sergei Korolev's many masterpieces, was the starting point of a process that would take us to the moon in little more than a decade. And that's where we got to go again! Why? Because it's what human's do. We are always pushing the boundaries, expanding our understanding of the world, should always have the drive to go further.

EDIT: Had I used Google today, I would've noticed.

Montreal's L'Auberge Alternative

Absolutely deprived of sleep, I arrived at Montreal's Trudeau Airport just shy of 7 AM. Of course, I did not feel adventurous enough to take the trip downtown using the public transportation system, but instead opted to take the direct shuttle bus, which, while slightly more expensive, was said to be a lot more comfortable and quicker. This bus took me to my first stop, the central railway station in downtown Montreal, where I switched to the bus serving the local hotels, which dropped me off at the Auberge Alternative.

Since I did not want to afford a real hotel, I decided to go with a hostel---after finding out that the bridges here in Montreal have a reputation for being quite drafty---and I was not disappointed. For $20 a night you get here a bed in one of the dormitories, which are really nicely set up. Everything is very clean and relaxed, there's free wireless and free fair trade coffee. Plus, it is situated perfectly! In the heart of the old part of Montreal... fantastic! I spent most of the day walking around and exploring downtown Montreal, trying to find the different spots where The Score was filmed.

Boarding pass to Montreal

Tomorrow morning at 6:15 AM I will be on my way to Montreal. This morning, I was able to confirm my reservation and even print my boarding pass. Thus, I will only have to get a cab to the airport and get on the plane. Even though the coming night will be brief, I am looking forward to the workshop on Sunday and to see Montreal. I will stay at a hostel that is (almost) right next to the conference hotel---given that they have not lost my reservation. I guess I should better confirm that today. Anyways, I will take some pictures and post them here.

Once I am back, I will also try to answer your questions regarding Canada.

EDIT: The reservation was not lost.

Cobalt blues

I was surprised. After I did not take the Yaris, I was worried that I would rent an American car that behaved more like a boat than a road-going vehicle. Given these expectations, it probably wasn't too hard to be pleasantly surprised. The Cobalt was, by far, not as bad as I had thought. And now that I have returned it, I have the blues and miss it. Or, at least, I miss driving a car.

Very positiv, of course, were the Cobalt's 150 hp. Additionally, the suspension wasn't all bad for an American car. Which brings us to the things that are not necessarily A+. The suspension wasn't all that great, given European standards. There is some understeer, and the 4 speed automatic was not necessarily made to transfer the engines power to the road, either. But then, the price for a new Cobalt is about $15,000.

All things considered, the Cobalt is a car that I would rent again. Just not in Germany. Here in Canada, I don't have any reservations driving it around.

What do YOU want to know?

My dear readers, now that I have been here in Canada for a couple of days, this is the time and the place for YOU to learn things about Canada that you always longed to know.

If you are interested in a little trivia, such as: How much are bananas here? (75c per pound) Who does the funnierst beer commercials? (Molson) Why do Canadians say ahbuut instead of about? (No idea, yet) What do squirrels do after they drank too much Molson? (cf picture to this post) or: What does RCMP stand for? (Royal Canadian Mounted Police); this is YOUR chance! Just post what you want to know in the comments to this blog post!

They took my driver's licence

Click for: German or English

Spitzespitzespitze.

Since I have my study permit now, I was downtown today and applied for a Social Insurance Number (it's a SIN) and a Canadian driver's licence. Everything went very smoothly, although the exchange of the licence was accompanied by a hefty fee of $60... right, that is: sixty!

The fact was compounded by them keeping my German licence. The nice lady at Service New Brunswick just handed me a phone number of the Department of Public Safety and told me to find out there if I could get it back from them. Fantastic! It would be really great if I were to get back my German licence. Greatgreatgreat!
